When you hear the word Mustang, you think,”fast, sporty, fun”. You don’t necessarily think, “Electric” or “SUV.” Ford is setting out to change that. With the creation of the Ford Mustang Mach-E they are adding “electric” and “SUV” to the description of the iconic sports vehicle. For the first time in 55 years, Ford is adding something new to the Mustang line of vehicles. The Mustang Mach-E is an all electric crossover SUV. You read that correctly, Ford has created a crossover SUV for the Mustang family of cars. The Mach-E was introduced to the public on November 17, 2019, and it is anticipated to be at dealerships in late 2020 as a 2021 model.
The Mach-E will be offered with the choice of either a standard-range or extended-range battery and either all-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive that gets power from permanent magnet motors. The extended-range battery plus rear-wheel drive gives the Mach-E a projected EPA-estimated range of 300 miles. The extended-range battery plus all-wheel drive gives the Mach-E a projected 332 horsepower and 417 lb-ft of torque.
Choose from two performance versions of the Mustang Mach-E, the GT, or the GT Performance Edition. The GT is projected to travel from 0 to 60 in less than 4 seconds which makes it faster than the Macan Turbo from Porsche. The GT Performance Edition compares to a Porsche 911 GTS with times off the line that are in the mid-3-second range. Both GT models have a projected 459 horsepower and 617 lb-ft of torque. The Mach-E is more than just proficient at saving gas. It’s a gas saver that also provides a thrilling drive.
Three distinct driving experiences are offered by the Mustang Mach-E–Whisper, Engage, or Unbridled. Each experience gives you a combination of a distinct sensory experience and fine-tuned driving dynamics. Choosing between the modes allows customization of steering controls, ambient lighting, cluster animations that are based on driving behavior, and sounds that are expected with an all-electric driving experience.
The Mach-E offers an all-wheel drive system that provides improved handling versus the rear-wheel drive model as well as impressive acceleration in general. The system achieves the improved handling and acceleration by applying torque to the front and rear axles independently. The system has been tuned for outstanding traction, and Ford has tested the system in both wet and snowy conditions to improve control when the terrain is slippery. The Mach-E is the first production vehicle to be tuned at the Ford racing simulator in North Carolina.
The new Mustang Mach-E features the next generation SYNC entertainment system. The new SYNC system uses machine learning to adapt to driver preferences quickly and it features over-the-air updating capability. The 15.5 inch screen is a simple interface that uses the same touch, swipe, and pinch methods of control as a typical smartphone. Personalized suggestions based on driver habits make the next generation SYNC system more user friendly. Over-the-air updates gives the system the ability to suggest maintenance updates, enhance vehicle performance, or add new features to the system. All new in the Mustang Mach-E is Phone As A Key technology that allows your smartphone to act in the place of a key fob. Should the phone battery die, a code can be put into the center touchscreen to start the car.
The Mach-E is unmistakably a Mustang. It features the signature exterior elements that have become synonymous with the brand. The aggressive headlights that complement the long, powerful hood as well as the tri-bar taillights that accentuate the rear haunch design are signature style elements that are recognized as those of a Ford Mustang. While remaining true to the style of the Mustang, designers were able to create an all new roomy SUV.
The Mustang Mach-E is designed to seat up to 5 adults comfortably. The rear seats can be folded down to increase the 29 cubic feet of rear cargo trunk space to 59.6 cubic feet. Under the hood is even more cargo room in the form of a drainable front trunk. The front trunk storage space gives 4.8 cubic feet of space that can carry small luggage or be used to hold ice and drinks for trips or tailgating.
